The Circle of Life
Robert E Larson
I wake you up, and bring you downstairs for breakfast.
I help you eat, hand over hand, bowl to mouth, bowl to mouth, until it’s gone. I help you dress, talk you through the arms and the legs, make sure everything is on right. I try to keep you as reasonably clean as possible. And safe. Always safe. I ask you where you’re going. “Out back,” you say, and I come too, to keep you safe Make sure you don’t fall, or at least when you do I can be there to pick you back up, Brush off your knees, bandage your wounds And get you going again. At the end of the day I tuck you in and sing you your favorite song Settle you down to sleep, to rest your body and mind for the morrow. Where we will do it all again In this repetitive dance. You did all of this for me when I was a child, now it’s the least I can do for you. |
