Kisses when you think i'm sleeping

Deena Ochoa Stevenson
When you wake up before me
But it's not quite yet time to get up
And you pull me close
Pressing your lips to my forehead
While I'm somewhere between sleep and wake
I can't yet move or speak
I might not even manage a smile
But there's never happiness purer
Than these moments
When I haven't yet remembered the bills we need to pay
The to-do lists, deadlines, or appointments
The bad news and injustices of the world
There's only a warm bed
You and me
Maybe a cat or three
And the joy of knowing your first early morning thought is to love me
And mine to love you
